Pickerel’s Path

Pickerel's PathThrough a combined effort of cabin owners and the Pickerel Lake State Recreation Area, it is now possible to hike from the West State Park, around the South End, to the East State Park. In the future, we hope to use volunteers to help make improvements such as markers and maintenance. Much of this route simply uses the private gravel roads directly behind lake cabins. Notable exceptions require a few helpful tips to respect these land owners.

  • At the north end of Ramona Beach, you may walk across the mowed lawn for approximately 50 yards to connect the gravel roads.
  • At the south end of Ramona Beach, the gravel road curves away from the lake (west) for 50 yards around a dumpster, then back toward the lake to Chilson Point Lane.
  • At the south end of Chilson Point Lane, there’s a short, but rougher surface which connects to Peabody Lane and continues to the South End (Lodge).
  • Enjoy the new foot bridge crossing over the old “Fish Hatchery” stream to enter the East State Park.

The Future

We hope this path will provide a safer and more enjoyable alternative to the paved highways around Pickerel Lake. If you wish to volunteer or provide support for this project, please send us an email. trails@pickerellakeconservancy.org

New Foot Bridge

Thanks to a combined effort, Ryan Skadsen’s team completed a new foot bridge over the outlet in the West State Park for his Eagle Scout project. The State Park and the Boys Scouts of America approved the project, which was supported by PLC (formerly GPLA). Although it serves as an important addition to Pickerels Path, it’s rapidly becoming a peaceful vista for observing the mesmerizing creek over which it traverses. While technical skills and planning were required, it serves as a milestone for bringing all three organizations together in a joint venture. Congratulations Ryan!

Be Considerate

Use caution anywhere access leaves a gravel road. Please follow State Park guidelines and common sense when hiking. The future of Pickerel’s Path depends on hikers respecting others’ property.

  • Dogs need to be on a leash no longer than 10 feet.
  • Please clean up after your dog.
  • Please pick up any litter and place in the next available garbage can or dumpster.
  • Resist wandering through private gardens or yards without permission.
  • Heed the warning of a barking dog and don’t approach other pets.
  • Motorized vehicles (4 wheelers, dirt bikes etc) are not permitted.
